Golden Bowl, the only bowling center in the city of Golden, was established in 1952. It was, and still is the home of numerous bowling tournaments and leagues. Golden Bowl was around before automatic scoring became the norm and scoring was recorded by hand, then displayed by a projector. It was also around when bowling pins were re-set by hand and a view of busy hands and feet behind the pins could be seen from the bowling settee. Golden Bowl is the hangout place for high school students from Golden High School and college students from the Colorado School of Mines. Today, Golden Bowl, with its rotating sign on the corner of 24th and East St. and old Coca-cola sign on its southeast façade, are listed as historical landmarks.
Golden Bowl was extensively renovated in 2006 under the new ownership of Thomas Yang, a Chinese immigrant who came to America at the age of 16; He barely spoke any English. All 24 lanes were refurbished with automatic scoring, upgraded pin setters, and overhead television screens. Recently, in June of 2008, in order to meet the requirements for bowling tournaments and leagues, synthetic lanes were installed to replace many of the old wooden lanes that had deteriorated. After decades of success in the Chinese restaurant industry Tom and his brother Roy opened a Chinese restarant inside the bowling center. These changes were the beginning of great things to come for Golden Bowl.
On December 1st, 2009 Tom sold the bowling center to Mike and Cindy Keily, who managed the center for Tom from September 2006 to August 2008. Mike is a 26-year-old college graduate from Colorado State University where he received a bachelor's degree in Sociology. He currently bowls on the PBA Regional and PBA National Tour on a part-time basis. He has twelve 300 games and three 800 series. Cindy has been involved in bowling in one way or another for the past 30 years. She was the tournament director for Mile Hi Tour, scholarship administrator for the Greater Denver USBC, and Lane Certification Director for the Greater Denver USBC. Once taking over ownership of Golden Bowl, Mike and Cindy updated the menu and changed the chinese restaurant into a family diner. They named it Rose's Diner, in honor of Rose Sabell (mother to Cindy and grandmother to Mike). The restaurant offers a variety of food including American, Mexican, and Italian dishes.
The center also has an extensive snack bar menu that serves hotdogs, hamburgers, french fries, nachos, and pizzas. Golden Bowl also offers a wide variety of video games including Dance Dance Revoultion, Big Buck Hunter, and Air Hockey.
Golden Bowl offers a full service bar and lounge named Louie's Tavern, in honor of Louis Sabell (father to Cindy and grandfather to Mike). Since Golden Bowl is located so closely to Coors Brewing Company we proudly offer only Coors products on our taps. The six draft beers that we currently offer include Coors, Coors Light, Killians, Colorado Native, Blue Moon, and PBR. The bar also offers a wide variety of bottled beer and liquor. Another recent edition to Golden Bowl is the patio outside the bar for customers to enjoy their drinks in the sun.
Golden Bowl actively participates in the community, holding many fundraisers for individuals, businesses, and non-profit groups. Golden Bowl is proud to sponsor the Golden High School Bowling Teams every year. The center is also host to the annual "Scrambowl - Bowling For Lights" that decorate South Golden Road every Christmas season. In the Summer on every first Saturday from May through August, Golden Bowl is part of the "Golden Cruise" exhibition of antique cars open to the public.
